What age and type of student is accepted into the Therapeutic Day School?
We consider students from ages 6-13 upon admission, who struggle with social, emotional and behavioral challenges related to Attention Deficit Disorder, Mood Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asperger’s, High Functioning Autism (HFA) Disorder, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder), Anxiety Disorder and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Referrals for students over the age of 13 are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

How long do students stay in the program?
Every child receives individualized care and planning while at Green Chimneys, therefore lengths of stay vary from one student to the next. The average length of stay for students in the therapeutic day school is two or more years.

How is a student’s readiness for discharge determined?
Collaboration between the Green Chimneys treatment team, you as parent(s) and school district at the annual CSE meeting determines when a child is ready for discharge from the therapeutic day school.

Will my child fall behind academically?
Green Chimneys follows the New York State Core Curriculum and standards to ensure that each student follows an academic program for their grade level. The curriculum can be modified depending upon the strengths and weaknesses of your child, so that he or she can learn at an appropriate pace and experience personal success.

How do you select a classroom for each student?
The appropriate classroom for each student is determined by the education leadership team based on the academic, social, emotional and behavioral profile of the student, and classroom availability.
